ABOUT US

Mud Club was set up to give extended periods of time outdoors to children

Our ethos at Mud Club is to allow the children to explore nature in a supportive and nurturing environment. All activities are consent based, playful and with a hands on approach. We are always eager to hear the children's opinions about what else they would like to do at Mud Club and how we can facilitate their ideas.

At each session we will have a range of age-appropriate structured activities available for the children to participate in. This will include guided nature activities such as woodwork, knot tying, fire starting, cooking on the fire, and natural arts and crafts, as well as plenty of opportunity for free play in nature. They will be developing life skills such as building relationships, problem solving, critical thinking, reasoning, resilience, adaptability and risk assessing.

What to expect/bring

Wildcat Wilderness is a community green space. It is a natural wilderness off Catford Hill which is managed by volunteers. It runs along the river, although there is no access to the river from the site. It is a flat area with woodland, small open spaces and paths throughout. There is a base camp shelter with a fire pit. There are bee hives in an enclosed and secluded area and a little vegetable garden with a polytunnel. It is a little oasis in Catford, SE London.

Toileting and hand washing
We have a composting toilet on site, in a little shed. We also have a hand washing station with a big bottle of clean water and liquid soap. Please send a small towel for hand drying.

Magic of Forester’s is a family run organic Christmas Tree farm in Bromley. We are so lucky to have the opportunity to run sessions from a section of the land, fondly known as ‘The Glade’. Our space includes an open grassy glade, woodland, and a shallow stream. We have a rainbow teepee tent when shelter is needed, and a fire pit. We have access to two toilets with full hand washing facilities located at the meeting point.

Toileting and hand washing
We have access to two toilets with full hand washing facilities. We also have handwashing facilities in the glade.

Forest school runs in all weather except for high winds and storms. The forest school leader or manager will check the weather forecasts prior to sessions and will cancel if either of the above to weather conditions apply. If one of these weather conditions happen within a session, we will follow the weather conditions risk assessment guidance.

Correct clothing should be worn to ensure that the children can get the most out of their time with us and participate fully in the activities. These are weather dependent, but include waterproof trousers/dungarees, walking boots or warm wellies (thermal). A waterproof coat with a hood. A base layer preferably thermal, a mid layer and a really warm jumper. Hat, gloves and multiple pairs of socks. A sun hat in the summer and loose layers, but always with long trousers and closed toe shoes. Sunscreen should be applied before attending if needed.

Parents and carers must meet us on time at the specified drop off/pick up point. If you are running late please let us know. For safety and security, we cannot wait for you if you are running late, as we need to supervise the other children. If you are late and there is no one to greet you, you must bring your child to the site.

At pick up time we will meet you at the drop off/pick up point. Children are only to be collected by an adult who has been authorised to do so on their registration form. In exceptional circumstances, if the parent requires another person who is not listed on the registration form to collect their child, the child’s parents or carers must inform the Club in advance and provide written consent via email or text message.

Children are only allowed to leave unaccompanied by prior arrangement, with written consent, at the discretion of the manager.  Please let us know if you are running late for pick up. If you are more than 15 minutes late without notifying us, we will follow the procedure outlined in our uncollected children policy. Please see our arrivals and departures policy for further information.

A list of clothing and other resources we wish parents and carers to bring to each session:

  1. Bring plenty of water, snacks and a packed lunch, with NO NUTS.
  2. Layers of clothing and waterproof clothes and boots. Children MUST wear long trousers and closed toe shoes even in the summer. Please see the clothing policy for full details.
  3. Sunscreen/insect repellent if needed.
  4. Any medication, including inhalers and epi-pens – give this to the session leader with instructions of use.
  5. A plate, bowl, cup and cutlery, with a plastic bag to take dirty dishes home in. We often cook a snack or make a drink together!
  6. A small towel for drying hands after washing.
